#Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other
materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. #The_stitch is part of the
thread-counting technique in embroidery, in which stitches are formed in the
shape of the letter X. This stitch is often applied in a cloth called canvas,
Etamine cloth, or linen, or any type of fabric with visible countable
pores.#Etamine_cloth is made of cotton or synthetic fibers, and is called a Java
canvas.
Embroidery on canvas is an art that goes back centuries ago.
It was the basis for household industries among different peoples, and each
nation's art can be easily recognized by its distinctive drawings and colors.
Elias Howe is considered the inventor of the sewing machine
as we know it today. The model he patented in 1846 was the first actual
commercial sewing machine. Howe's machine had a needle with an eye near its
tip. The thread is carried by a spool underneath the cloth. As for the needle,
it is fixed on a vibrating mechanical arm and carries the upper thread. The
movement of the mechanical arm joint inserts the thread into the fabric, and
the bobbin carries the lower thread through the loop of the upper thread,
creating a tight stitch. Most domestic sewing machines today use this type of
double thread lock stitch. The lock stitch cannot be loosened like the chain
stitch, which was the main technique used in older sewing machines. However,
the chain stitch had a major drawback, it was weak and can unravel easily.
