Jacquard is a type of fabric that feature complex patterns woven directly into the fabric, rather than
being printed on the surface. The special machine loom used to produce these patterns was invented by
the French textile artisan Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804. As a result, it was named after him.
Jacquard patterns are incorporated into the fabric with a slight rise on the surface, giving it a long-lasting
luster and durability that will resist against fading or fraying over time. Modern takes on the time-
honoured traditional brocade and jacquard designs can be combined with a rich variety of fabric
materials, including cotton, silk, wool, and linen. While there are no limits to the range of possible
woven patterns, including florals, stripes, polka dots, and more, because of its durability, heavyweight,
and elasticity compared to other textiles, jacquard is particularly desirable in homewares including
drapes, duvet, and covers, but has also been featured in luxury stage costumes and wedding gowns.
History of Jacquard Fabric
The invention of the earliest draw loom is attributed to the ancient Chinese, more than 2,000 years ago.
It requires two operators. The weaver sits at the front, feeds weft threads and lowers them into place.
The assistant 'draw boy' sits next to the loom and manages dozens (or even hundreds) of figure harness.
These are frames that hold wrap threads in place. Joseph Marie Jacquard modified the draw loom by
replacing shed belts with design individual shapes attached to small weights. He also used a series of
metal punched cards. Multiple rows of holes are punched on each card and the many cards that
compose the design of the textile are strung together in order, replacing the human assistant.
Till computers were invented, the Jacquard loom was the most complex piece of machinery in the
world. In fact, the Jacquard loom is the predecessor to the computer punched card readers of the 19th
and 20th centuries.
In an ironic turn of events that resulted from the technological revolution, Jacquard looms are now
operated by computer programs instead of pattern tracing punched cards.
Taking care of Jacquard items:
1. Before using a new item, it is necessary to wash it in water using a mild detergent with low to
medium temperature of up to 30 degrees. Cushion covers should be inside out, and the washing
machine should not be overloaded, otherwise wrinkles may appear on the products. Moreover,
additional friction may adversely affect the appearance of the laundry.
2. Use the “Delicate” or “Gentle” wash setting for delicate fabrics, and the same applies to
spinning and drying settings. Laundry must be removed from the washing machine immediately
after the washing process is completed, so that it does not wrinkle.
3. Do not dry delicates directly in the sun.
4. For white jacquard products, using chlorine bleach it is not recommended, as it may weaken
textile fibers.
Use a special stain remover before washing, if necessary.
